He is one of the prime sishyas of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a> and learnt all sAsthra arthams from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a> himself. periyavAchAn piLLai became an illustrious AchAryan in our sampradhAyam by the grace of nampiLLai.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/periyiavachanpillai-nampillai.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1165\" alt=\"periyiavachanpiLLai-nampillai\" src=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/periyiavachanpillai-nampillai.jpg\" width=\"495\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/periyiavachanpillai-nampillai.jpg 495w, https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/periyiavachanpillai-nampillai-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a>periyavAchAn piLLai &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As identified in periya thirumozhi 7.10.10, it is said that thirukkaNNamangai empeumAn wanted to learn the meanings of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/01\/23\/thirumangai-azhwar-english\/\">thirumangai AzhwAr<\/a>&#8216;s pAsurams from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/01\/23\/thirumangai-azhwar-english\/\">kaliyan<\/a> himself &#8211; so kaliyan took the avathAram of nampiLLai and emperumAn took the avathAram of periyavAchAn piLLai to learn all the meanings of the aruLicheyal. He is also known as vyAkyAna chakkaravarthi, abhaya pradha rAjar, etc. He adopts <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/04\/21\/nayanarachan-pillai-english\/\">nAyanArAchAn piLLai<\/a> as his son.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In his life time, he has done vyAkyAnams for:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>4000 dhiyva prabhandham &#8211; He has written vyAkyAnams for all of aruLicheyal. vyAkyAnams for approximately 400 pAsurams for <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/01\/20\/periyazhwar-english\/\">periyAzhwAr<\/a> thirumozhi was lost and <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/23\/azhagiya-manavala-mamunigal-english\/\">mAmunigaL<\/a> just wrote those missing pAsura vyAkyAnams.<\/li>\n<li>sthOthra granthams &#8211; He has written vyAkyAnams for pUrvAchArya srisUkthis like sthOthra rathnam, chathu slOki, gadhya thryayam, etc and jithanthE sthOthram.<\/li>\n<li>sri rAmAyaNam &#8211; He has selected important slOkams from sri rAmAyaNam and written a detailed commentary for those in rAmAyaNa thani slOki. He was named abhaya pradha rAjar for his masterful explanation of vibhIshaNa sharanAgathi episode.<\/li>\n<li>He has also written many rahasya granthams such as mANikka mAlai, parantha rahasyam, sakala prAmANa thAthparyam, etc which explains rahasya thrayam in an excellent manner. He was a pioneer in documenting rahasya thrayam &#8211; piLLai lOkAchAryar took the essence of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a> and periyavAchAn piLLai&#8217;s teachings and wrote his astAdhasa rahasya granthams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>His expertise in aruLicheyal and sri rAmAyaNam can be understood by his grantham called pAsurapadi rAmyAyanam where he uses words from aruLicheyal to explain the whole of sri rAmAyaNam in a crisp manner.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>The power of his grace can also be understood from the incident happened in <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/22\/vadhi-kesari-azhagiya-manavala-jiyar-english\/\">vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar<\/a>. jIyar, in his pUrvAshramam was serving in the thirumadappaLLi (kitchen) of periyavAchAn piLLai&#8217;s thirumALigai. He was an illiterate but had strong devotion towards his AchAryan. Once when he overheard some srivaishnavas discussing some vEdhAntha vishayam, he enquired from them about the topic of discussion. Them being arrogant and considering him as an illiterate said they were discussing about a grantham called &#8220;musala kisalayam&#8221; (newly blossomed\u00a0 pounder). He went and mentioned this to his AchAryan and periyavAchAn piLLai out of his grace decided to teach everything to him. After a few years, he becomes a master of all sAstram and goes on to become <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/22\/vadhi-kesari-azhagiya-manavala-jiyar-english\/\">vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar<\/a> and writes several granthams himself on our sampradhAyam.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Just like <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi-english\/\">periya perumAL<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi-english\/\">periya pirAtti<\/a>, periya thiruvadi, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/01\/20\/periyazhwar-english\/\">periyAzhwAr<\/a> and periya kOil, AchAn piLLai also due to his greatness became to be known as periyavAchAn piLLai.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/23\/azhagiya-manavala-mamunigal-english\/\"> maNavALa mAmunigaL<\/a> in his upadhEsa rathina mAlai dedicates two pAsurams specifically to periyavAchAn piLLai.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>pAsuram: 43<\/div>\n<div><em>nampiLLai thammudaiya NallaruLAl Eviyidap <\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>pin periyavAchAn piLLai athanAl <\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>inbA varubathi mARan maRaip poruLai chonnathu <\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>irupathu nAlAyiram <\/em><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em>\u0ba8\u0bae\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bbf\u0bb3\u0bcd\u0bb3\u0bc8 \u0ba4\u0bae\u0bcd\u0bae\u0bc1\u0b9f\u0bc8\u0baf \u0ba8\u0bb2\u0bcd\u0bb2\u0bb0\u0bc1\u0bb3\u0bbe\u0bb2\u0bcd \u0b8f\u0bb5\u0bbf\u0baf\u0bbf\u0b9f\u0baa\u0bcd<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>\u0baa\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0baa\u0bc6\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0baf\u0bb5\u0bbe\u0b9a\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bbe\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0baa\u0bbf\u0bb3\u0bcd\u0bb3\u0bc8 \u0b85\u0ba4\u0ba9\u0bbe\u0bb2\u0bcd<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>\u0b87\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bbe \u0bb5\u0bb0\u0bc1\u0baa\u0ba4\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bbf \u0bae\u0bbe\u0bb1\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0bae\u0bb1\u0bc8\u0baa\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bca\u0bb0\u0bc1\u0bb3\u0bc8\u0b9a\u0bcd \u0b9a\u0bca\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0ba9\u0ba4\u0bc1<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>\u0b87\u0bb0\u0bc1\u0baa\u0ba4\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bc1 \u0ba8\u0bbe\u0bb2\u0bbe\u0baf\u0bbf\u0bb0\u0bae\u0bcd<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Simple Translation: Out of his grace, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a> orders periyavAchAn piLLai to write a commentary for thiruvAimozhi. Having that in mind, periyavAchAn piLLai wrote the most enjoyable commentary for <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">nammAzhwAr<\/a>&#8216;s thiruvAimozhi which is the essence of all vEdhas.\u00a0 The commentary was written similar to sri rAmAyaNam, i.e., containing 24000 padi (similar to 24000 slOkams in sri rAmAyaNam).<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>pAsuram: 46<\/div>\n<div><em>periyavAchAn piLLai\u00a0 pinbuLLavaikkum\u00a0 <\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>theriya vyAkiyaigaL cheyvAl <\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>ariya aruLichcheyal poruLai AriyargatkippOthu <\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>aruLichcheyalAyth thaRiNthu<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em>\u0baa\u0bc6\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0baf\u0bb5\u0bbe\u0b9a\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bbe\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0baa\u0bbf\u0bb3\u0bcd\u0bb3\u0bc8\u00a0 \u0baa\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bc1\u0bb3\u0bcd\u0bb3\u0bb5\u0bc8\u0b95\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bc1\u0bae\u0bcd<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>\u0ba4\u0bc6\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0baf \u0bb5\u0bcd\u0baf\u0bbe\u0b95\u0bbf\u0baf\u0bc8\u0b95\u0bb3\u0bcd \u0b9a\u0bc6\u0baf\u0bcd\u0bb5\u0bbe\u0bb2\u0bcd<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>\u0b85\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0baf \u0b85\u0bb0\u0bc1\u0bb3\u0bbf\u0b9a\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bc6\u0baf\u0bb2\u0bcd \u0baa\u0bca\u0bb0\u0bc1\u0bb3\u0bc8 \u0b86\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0baf\u0bb0\u0bcd\u0b95\u0b9f\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bbf\u0baa\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bcb\u0ba4\u0bc1<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>\u0b85\u0bb0\u0bc1\u0bb3\u0bbf\u0b9a\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bc6\u0baf\u0bb2\u0bbe\u0baf\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bcd \u0ba4\u0bb1\u0bbf<\/em>\u0ba8\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bc1<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Simple Translation: It is due to periyavAchAn piLLai&#8217;s commentaries for aruLicheyal, the great teachers are able to understand and propagate the true meanings of aruLicheyal. Without these vyAkyAnams, no one can speak about the inner meanings of aruLicheyal.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/23\/azhagiya-manavala-mamunigal-english\/\">mAmunigaL<\/a> in pAsuram 39, identifies that periyavAchAn piLLai was one of the 5 vyAkyAna karthAs for thiruvAimozhi, there by saving it and propagating it to everyone since without the vyAkyAnams we cannot understand the inner meanings of aruLicheyal.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Several incidents from his life are recorded in vArthA mAlai grantham and other pUrVAchArya granthams. Let us see some here:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>When some asks if we are target of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi-english\/\">emperumAn<\/a>&#8216;s krupai or leelai &#8211; periyavAchAn piLLai says &#8220;if we think that we are caught in this samsAram, we are target of emperumAn&#8217;s krupai and if we think that we are happy in this samsAram, we are target of emperumAn&#8217;s leelai&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>When some one asks what does pArathanthriya mean? periyavAchAn piLLai says that depending fully on <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi-english\/\">emperumAn<\/a>&#8216;s sakthi, completely giving up upAyAntharams (including self efforts) and ever longing for bhagavath kainkarya mOksham is pArathanthriyam.<\/li>\n<li>When some one asks what is upAyam? Is it us giving up everything or holding on to him? periyavAchAn piLLai says that both are not upAyam it is emperumAn who made us give up everything and hold on to him is the upAyam.<\/li>\n<li>Once when bandhu of periyavAchAn piLLai is worried and he asks for the reason. She says she is very worried since she has been in this samsAram since anAdhi kAlam and with so much karma how emperumAn will give her mOksham. For that periyavAchAn piLLai says, we are <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi-english\/\">emperumAn<\/a>&#8216;s property and he will take us when he wants to irrespecitve of our karmas.<\/li>\n<li>When a srivaishnava finds fault in another srivaishnava, periyavAchAn piLLai says that yaman is asking his servants to move away from srivaishnavas without looking at their faults, pirAtti says &#8220;na kaschin na aparAdhyathi&#8221; &#8211; dont look at anyone&#8217;s faults, perumAL says even if my bhakthas do mistakes it is good only, AzhwAr says who ever <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi-english\/\">emperumAn<\/a>&#8216;s bhakthas are, they have to be praised.
